feMaking art has been a lifelong passion of mine. I learned in courses and workshops in communities where I lived- upstate New York, the Boston area and the Washington DC area. From the late seventies on, I spent time every year in Wellfleet on Outer Cape Cod, and have been creating art inspired by the Outer Cape ever since. I am drawn to the often dramatic changes in light, clouds, wind, and tides, and their effects on colors, shapes and textures in marshes, dunes and shorelines. In 2015 I purchased a home with a studio in Wellfleet and I now live full-time on the Cape. One of the reasons I bought this home is that my studio was built and used by Edwin Dickinson, an "artist's artist" who was well known in New York and Provincetown as an art teacher as well as creator .
For many years, I painted almost exclusively in watercolors, enjoying their unique and fresh qualities, as well as the ease of carrying them when painting outdoors, en plein air. In the past decade, with more time following retirement from full-time day jobs and with the studio on the Cape, I again took up oil painting, still largely working en plein air. I love being immersed in nature, and that infuses my work. I am drawn to capturing the hour to hour, day to day, and season to season changes in the Outer Cape's still wild landscape. I often use a palette knife, and sometimes use cold wax, both methods contributing to my interest in creating textures reflecting the landscape. When out walking and exploring I also take photos that I think will inspire me in the studio in creating oil paintings as well as original prints. These include white line woodcuts, also known as "Provincetown prints" and monotypes, or “painterly prints". In creating monotypes I select photos to serve as starting references. Then I paint on plexiglass, usually with brayers, and when done, make one image on a printing press. The results often contain some surprises. I find these works on paper to be very satisfying in evoking the feeling of the scenes that sparked them.
In addition to the Outer Cape, I have painted en plein air in New Mexico, Vermont, the Bahamas, Guatemala, Peru, France, Italy, Switzerland, Greece and Bali. In July 2025 I will be painting in Nova Scotia in a residency at Hammer and Sky. Wherever I am, I am aiming to capture the essence of what drew me to a scene. When I am not working outdoors or using photo references to create landscapes, I enjoy the challenges of painting models in open life sessions. In 2020 and 2021, most of these paintings were done in live Zoom sessions.
As you can see in my resume, I have shown my work in solo, group, member and open exhibits in galleries and arts organizationa on the Cape, elsewhere in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and in DC, Virginia and Maryland. My work is in private collections across the U.S. as well as in Italy.
